David Gosse Awarded Search Engine Patent

by David Gosse on December 8, 2008

US Patent Application Number 10/650,684

I wanted to create search software that could be controlled. The search engine that I wanted to embed into my websites and client websites needed a way to administer the results and change them so that they were more relevant for the site. So I co-invented a controllable search algorithm and on October 21, 2008 the patent was awarded by the US Patent Office.

I filed the patent on August 29, 2003 so it has been a long 5 years before finally being awarded the patent. You can see the full details on the patent over at the US Patent Office website.  The basics of the invention are that a web-based user administrative interface allows keywords to be associated with specific URL’s in your website’s search engine database.  Those keywords are assigned a score and the sum of the score of the words typed into the search box determine the order of the results displayed on a results page.  The higher the score, the higher the specific website URL is placed in the order of results on the search results page.

It is quite simple in its design but extremely effective and easy to administer.  Vortaloptics clients now have the ability not only to shape the quality of the results in their website’s search engine, but they can place in links for advertisers, affiliates, sponsors and partners.  Control was the main reason for developing the software, but monitization was also a key consideration for our clients.

The software is now deployed on a significant number of vertical client websites and the demand for the software is increasing.

I assigned the patent rights over to my vertical search engine company, Vortaloptics, Inc., and my shareholders were very pleased with the accomplishment of receiving the patent and the fact that I assigned it to the company directly.  This has added a significant IP value to Vortaloptics and with another patent pending, I hope to continue to maximize shareholder value over time.
